  3. It has come to our attention that "registered" copies of CATDISK have been
  4. appearing on bulletin boards around the world.  Several registered users have
  5. spotted these "releases" and were kind enough to send us a copy of them.
  6.  
  7. The one common feature to the four variations is that the shareware intro
  8. screens on all programs are bypassed, as well as the reminder screens that
  9. appear after you exit the program.
  10.  
  11. What is not common to all variations received to date is the nature of the
  12. trojan program code that has been inserted into the programs themselves.
  13.  
  14. It took extensive testing on our part to determine the circumstances under
  15. which this potentially destructive code would activate and what it would do
  16. when activated.

  18. One variation simply locks up the system.  Another wiped out the .DTA part of
  19. the catalog by first writing garbage to the beginning of the file and then
  20. erasing it, after which a "run-time error 1001" occurred (possibly due to poor
  21. programming methods on the part of the individual who added the trojan code in
  22. the first place).  A third variation that we found low-level formatted the
  23. first 5 tracks of a hard drive on our test machine.  Finally, a fourth has not
  24. exhibited any symptoms as yet, but we still consider it armed and dangerous.

  26. We do not intend to release a list of filenames under which we found these
  27. releases, as this is not a reliable means of locating the files, nor will we
  28. release a list of the circumstances under which these events occur.

  30. If you are not a registered user and are knowingly using a version of CATDISK
  31. that claims to be "registered" (you'll know this by the fact that the intro
  32. screen does not appear when you run the program), you are putting your data
  33. and possibly all information on your system at risk.
  34.  
  35. If you have a release that appears to be tampered with, you would best be
  36. advised to stop using that copy immediately and look for a legitimate release
  37. (that has the shareware intro screens intact).  Better yet, you might want to
  38. consider registering your copy with us and obtaining the latest version on
  39. disk or from our support BBS under the procedures outlined in the
  40. documentation.
